A Study in Pink

This is the BBC, modern day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson.

The plot sort of follows A Study in Scarlet but there are a lot of changes. A lot. So many changes that to say more would spoil it for those who haven’t seen it; but let me just say that if you were in STUD for the Mormon bashing, then you’re going to be very disappointed XD

So for this, I will just talk about the characters and themes and how well they have been adapted for a modern setting.

These are just some quick thoughts that I had jotted down then shaped into a vaguely coherent structure. There aren’t really any spoilers, especially if you're already familiar with the canon.

Apologies for babble.

It’s a three patch problem. )

You can tell can't you, that I'm wasting time? Yeah, but at least you get pretty pictures out of it.

This is my pic spam, going a little way to explaining why I have an almost unconditional love for Star Trek: The Original Series

There is an obvious bias (mainly focussed on the OT3) and I would apologise for it, but I'm not the least bit sorry. I am unashamed! XD

This is not the end of it, either...sorry.

With evidence of unnecessary touching )

1.
Ashes to Ashes finished. I know it needed to be brought to a conclusion, it couldn’t go on forever but still I feel bereft. What am I going to do without it? I mean, it was a bit rough on my feminist side Gene Hunt...back seat of the Quattro...I think so, but I loved it so much. *sniffle*

2.
Lost also finished. About bloody time. And on that note...what? I know I haven’t really been paying attention for like, a while now, but still...was it just me or did it answer practically nothing? I know a little ambiguity is intriguing (you’re talking to a fan of The Prisoner) but this...no. Bah. I may have to re-watch the whole thing from beginning to end when I have time.

3.
I realised today that my Government, the ACTUAL one that runs my country RIGHT NOW, in my head goes a little like this:

David Cameron = Urquhart
George Osborne = Stamper
Nick Clegg = Sarah

Complete with weird triangular relationship and jealousy issues.

OMG people, I should not be thinking like this about important real life stuff! I blame [livejournal.com profile] uk_lolitics. It is preventing me from taking this seriously. Plus the BBC keeps describing David Cameron and Nick Clegg as a couple! It’s driving me goddamn crazy! It makes me mad because I would love it if I didn’t dislike Cameron so very, very much. Cameron/Osborne all the way! (That way I dislike both the people in the ship equally).

4.
I have been sort of fic writing. The thing is, we have the wedding of the century going on here at the moment (my friend would not have me describe it any other way), so I’ve been busy with real life...but this is good, happy real life so I’m down with that.

5.
I bought some cowboy boots. They’re very sexy but, to paraphrase Bill Maher: ‘there are no cowboys, I’m wearing a costume!’

6.
The weather has been very hot here. You know how bad we were during the cold weather? Well, we’re not very good in the heat either.

7.
Beyond the fic prompts you guys gave me I also have more Star Trek fic in my head; an AU of This Side of Paradise where they actually stay on the planet with the HIGHLY SUGGESTIVE plant life and another, as yet directionless, S/Mc fic (which at the moment consists of random bits of smut that need shaping into some sort of story).

TL;DR? I get too emotionally invested in TV, I’m starting to view my country’s politics as a fandom, I have no style, and I’ve been writing porn.

In two parts because Livejournal limits are the bane of my existence.

Anywho, here's a meme that I did before my hiatus and then forgot to post. I had to pick my favourite icons and write about them. I thought I'd post it now because it combines two things I love. Icons and my own fannish opinions XD

Just watching Doctor Who: The Invasion.

Patrick Troughton = best Doctor ever! Arguments to the contrary will be mocked and jeered at because they are scandalous lies!

*sigh* I love this fandom so much, I just wish it wasn't so utterly wanky.

Also, Omega in The Three Doctors is Stephen Thorne. He's the one of the blokes who played Lestrade in the BBC radio plays, isn't he? I totally didn't recognise his voice! I didn't even realise it was him until I read the credits at the end. That's actually quite impressive that he can sound so very different.

Ouch

mymetalphantom: (Reaper...The Devil...tada!)
A three day migraine has served to make me miserable. Head is still thumping away nicely, but at least it isn't quite as bad. Plus the nausea and double vision have stopped. After suffering from migraines and almost constant headaches for fifteen years you'd think I'd be used to it by now, wouldn't you?

Anywho, I spent most of yesterday lying down in a dark room listening to the BBC radio Sherlock Holmes.

The Cardboard Box - Is this Lestrade at his most thick? Normally he's just "conventional" as Holmes mocks, but here it seems like he's being wilfully stupid. He doesn't even listen when Holmes is practically handing him the clues. And what's his problem with medical students anyway? Bless him. ♥♥ I really love the stories with Lestrade in them. Also, Kevin Whately's pretty great in this.

The Dying Detective - How amazing is that story? How amazing is the radio adaptation? I think this might be my favourite from the BBC adaptations. It's one of those stories where everything is just brilliant; the villain who was a good, actually rather liberal and progressive man who became so blinkered by his work that it eventually drove him to murder. Not just that, but Holmes also being a devious bastard as well, tricking poor Watson like that. I must confess that I kinda like Holmes when he's a bit of bastard (you might already have gathered that).

I had more thoughts as well when I was lying there but I've forgotten them all except those.

On a completely unrelated note, something that amused me, one because it was hilarious/insane, and two because my finding out about it coincided with my uploading some new Reaper icons; according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, 14% of conservatives in New Jersey believe that Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ! LOL, I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard that. Fundamentalists; they're the gift that keeps on giving. I mean, that's just crazy. I know I spent a lot of time comparing Tony Blair and/or Margaret Thatcher to Satan, but I didn't actually believe it! It was witty hyperbole!

Eh, I'm gonna lie down now.

I should be doing something productive. I did this instead. [livejournal.com profile] elaby gave me these five things to write about:

Holmes/Lestrade, Tim Stamper, Clive Merrison, icon-making, Russian!Holmes-and-Watson.

Lots of writing!

Holmes/Lestrade )

Tim Stamper )

Clive Merrison )

Icon-making )

Russian!Holmes and Watson )

tl;dr? I really like those five things!

Sherlock Holmes

This is part of the five things you associate with me thing that has been going around. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] weekend gave me five of my most excellent interests and this is the first one.

Any truth is better than infinite doubt )
mymetalphantom: (Holmes/Watson...the best 'ship ever!)
Well, I cracked on with the great dissertation today. I stress out but then when I actually sit down and GET ON WITH IT I realise that I know precisely where I'm going with it, so it's actually going well. Typing stuff up is not the hardest part of writing whacking great essays, it's just the most boring. My research and ideas are all formulated so it's just down to the boring stuff now.

Also, I was scrolling through my f'list, reading people's updates, trying to forget that I read a disturbing little piece about Trotsky's ashes, you know the usual. So I was scrolling down:

Me: Ooh, someone posted some Prisoner icons *clicks*...
...oh wait, that was me. *facepalm*

Dudes, I need some sleep! I have consumed far too much tea today. I'm starting to feel a little twitchy.

Quick Holmesian thought for the day. Re: shipping and sexuality.

Me: Of course all the people that have theorised and fanwanked about Holmes's sexuality/sexual practices have clearly forgotten to address the issue of the negative effect cocaine and tobacco has on the libido.
David:...Good point.

Two people in desperate need of a good night's sleep.

Okay

So I'm bored and temporarily unable to get to my TV and DVD player (damn!)

I have being watching my new DVDs though, which is all very exciting and squee worthy.

I have actually seen all these episodes before, but now I can watch them on a big screen and in a comfy chair and I can sit there with drinks and snacks! It is all amazing.

Vasily Livanov is very sexy and I love his voice like whoa! And I totally want to marry his Holmes because that would be the best thing ever! And Vitaly Solomin is sooo Watson and I love him a lot too. Just the fact that he is so suspicious of Holmes at first and then he challenges him to a boxing match and Mrs Hudson has some sherry waiting for him for when he gets beaten and I love Mrs Hudson too.

And The King of Blackmail...oh just brilliant. Just the Russian pronunciation alone - Meeel-verrr-tonn. And their shoddy attempt at burglary where almost everything goes wrong!

And then the...the one that's the Final Problem, whatever the Russian ep is called. Oh my God, totally a nightmare-inducing Moriarty who is all kinds of creepy! He's like a human spider *shudders*

But the fight at Reichenbach is brilliant, much better than Granada's I think. There is actual fighting and I love it so very much because I am a bit shallow for men in ripped clothes. Oh and so touching. Don't cry Watson.

Ahem, have I mentioned that I'm rather fond of this series?

On a more Granada-y note, behind the cut is a .gif that totally validates my second favourite ship.

Some Stuff

Weekend was great. Went to my friends for Sunday lunch and there was loads of us there and we went on a trampoline and it was WICKED! (even though it made my friend's little girl sick).

That's why I was still up late doing my creative, because I'd been having fun. Shameful.

Anyway...

Some Holmes stuff )

Also, this:

David: Did you know that, like, everything in your username is spelled wrong?
Me: Why do you fail so hard? *headdesk*
mymetalphantom: (Louis looks so pretty there)
I was putting the finishing touches to the chapters of my novel that I have to hand in for my creative writing module, when I suddenly realised that I had created a character called Mr Harvey! Hooray for unintentional Ladykillers reference!!!

Speaking of The Ladykillers Some Ladykillers babble )

House of Cards finished today. They cut Colin J's best line! Okay, it was because it was before the watershed, and the line in question contained a (very unsubtle) oral sex reference. But I still mourned its loss.

Next is To Play the King. Michael Kitchen proving that he sounds disturbingly like Prince Charles (even though he doesn't look like him) and Colin in nothing but a towel. This is a very odd programme.

Some Sherlock Holmes babble )
mymetalphantom: (Vasily Livanov Pretty Russian Holmes)
Watching House of Cards on cable was very annoying. Because BBC programmes have no advert breaks cable have to cut loads out of them so they can work their ten minutes of adverts in. This is why the BBC = better than all other channels.

Okay, and you people on the Points of View messageboard over at bbc.co.uk, stop whinging about...everything! And leave Jonathan Ross alone now because that is getting very, very, very old and boring.

Some Sherlock Holmes musing under the cut )

Note to self: Stop being in love with Matthew Wright!
