Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Name 5 songs you love starting with that letter.
It's a difficult concept, actually, picking songs that aren't necessarily your favourites but are your favourites beginning with a specific letter.
I was given the letter 'A'
Across the Universe – The Beatles
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as
They make their way across the universe
The lyrical genius (and madness) of John Lennon. Lennon and McCartney are my favourite song writing team (although I love George and Ringo's songs too), and The Beatles are my favourite band ever! I really don't think there is a song of their's that I don't like. This song is beautiful.
Ashes to Ashes – David Bowie
They got a message
from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too”
Yeah...what? I don’t know. Another person who can write melodious nonsense. It was a toss-up between this song and “Aladdin Sane”, but I went with this one in the end. I do love me some Bowie.
Ask – The Smiths
Coyness is nice, and
Coyness can stop you
From saying all the things in
Life you'd like to
Nothing like a bit of cynical Manchester Brit Pop. I always thought the Smiths were a band for pretentious twats, but I've found that I’ve grown into a pretentious twat and really love, not only the Smiths, but also Morrissey. Life, eh? (PS, I don’t really believe that Smiths fans are twats...just me XD).
American Tune – Paul Simon
Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
This isn’t just a token American in this bizarrely nationalistic post I’ve made XD
I love Paul Simon (blame my father) and think his lyrics are wonderful and I love his voice. Even though this isn’t my favourite song (it’s just my favourite one beginning with ‘A’) I do think it’s beautiful...even for a non-American such as I. I also love that he uses the term ‘bon vivant’.
All you Need is Me – Morrissey
I was a small, fat child in a welfare house
There was only one thing I ever dreamed about
And Fate has just
Handed it to me – whoopee
See, more Morrissey. I think I always thought his lyrics were stupid, until I realised that they were actually just really funny and sarcastic. Now I love them. I think I kinda love his voice as well. Also, LOL at 'whoopee'.
