Such petty first world problems

So I’ve been almost completely absent from Livejournal recently; occasionally posting something inane, or commenting sporadically. I haven’t even been tweeting that much either.

This is mainly because I’ve been ill…in a kind of semi-serious, non-life-threatening sort of way. In turn, that brought up all sorts of emotional issues, most of which are so petty that I wouldn’t dream of boring you nice people with them. But it has made me shockingly self-absorbed.

So my life has been somewhat stationary. I’ve done little more than exist over the past few months.

Anyway. Better now…sort of. Not moping about and feeling sorry for myself anymore which is a good sign. I attended my best friend’s wedding on the 18th, which was amazing! She looked beautiful, it was wonderfully emotional, and they hired a band who did a Beatles tribute. I got to do my embarrassing dance to “Saw Her Standing There” in front of a room full of people…which made a nice change from simply doing it in my living room. Good day all round, even though I paid for it the next day…ouch!

So that’s me. Recovering. Looking on the bright-side.

Oh, also, this: Graham Linehan has written a Ladykillers stage play! And it stars Peter Capaldi! *flail*

Oh, Colin. I love you baby, but your singing gives me wicked second hand embarrassment. That said, d'aww CUTE!

Also, LOL, the lyrics! Just...LOL.

Oh Man

Just to make my life that little bit more difficult, my graphics card sort of went pop and took the power supply to my old computer with it. Thus killing the poor thing for good. RIP my old computer.

Still, c'est la vie. At least I didn't lose any files this time (although I have lost quite a lot of money *shakes fist*).

Anywho, good things happened recently. We celebrated the imminent marriage of a friend on a rather boozy weekend in Cheltenham. There were cocktails and stuff. And we went to a club that played really cheesy music and basically behaved like idiots. Good times.

It's not a bad old world, really.

I'm allowed to ignore the bad stuff for one day.

Some stuff

1. Because I’m basically an idiot, I changed my email address for LJ when they were having all that comment notification trouble, then I promptly forgot that I had done it. If you wrote a comment to me and I haven’t replied...well, that’ll be why. *facepalm* I swear, I am clever sometimes.

2. I finally put the finishing touches to my 60s themed living room. Of course, the TV and computer don’t quite fit that theme but hey, whatever.

Pictures - just scroll past the link if you're not interested )

3. I finally found my college files on the back up of my old hard drive. In one file was the novel that I planned, researched, plotted and wrote three chapters of for my creative writing assignment. I should probably finish that, right? I could be sitting on a best selling novel! *hollow laughter*

4. I would quite like to write some fic, but I've run dry on ideas. Any suggestions?

"...I find the things that *YOU DO*..."

I think I posted this here a few years ago (and it's very famous, obv.), but the other day I found the link for it in the crap that I took off my old hard drive, and it coincided with me watching Richard III (for the eleventy-millionth time).

A combination of some of my favourite things; Peter Sellers, The Beatles and Olivier's Richard III*.

Also, I was bored and had nothing better to do than post this.

*I am shameless fangirly for Olivier's Richard; mock away, my beautiful ones.

This morning's lulz

Colin Jeavons was in this morning's episode of "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?" on Radio 7. Being kidnapped by two young women. LOL.

Made me smile this morning. I do have a temperature though, of course.

I am such a loser sometimes...most of the time...

I was watching Dracula AD 1972, which is a movie with no nutritional value whatsoever. Yet, like junk food, there is something oddly satisfying about it.

Anywho, I haven't seen this film in a while so I had completely forgotten that MICHAEL KITCHEN WAS IN IT. *flail*

Cut to save your f'lists (also warning for 70s fashion!) )

I'm gonna go now. I'm tired and thus have been having comma problems in this post. :D

The Return of Procrastinato

1. So the RBS Six Nations rugby has been eating my weekends. England look set to win. That would be extremely exciting if I wasn’t a Wales supporter. As it is, well...all I’m thinking is ‘at least it won’t be France’.

2. Other than that I’ve been watching more Star Trek: TNG. OMG I totally love it! I always have done, ever since I was a wee kiddie but I definitely love it even more now that I’m grown up enough to appreciate the awesome. I fear my love may eventually spill out into a squee post. As will the item in my next point...

3. I’ve also been watching Hammer films. I can’t get over how much pure joy I can get from watching Hammer films, but there it is. The Frankenstein series, when actually watched as a series, makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. I’m pretty sure Hammer invented retconning, because these films have a tendency to conveniently forget past plot points or just make random shit up when they need to. Also, Baron Frankenstein escapes almost-certain-death so many times that one begins to think he is part cat. And yet, despite this and the eventual silliness that Hammer devolved into in its later years, I completely love them! I need to add Hammer’s Frankenstein to my list of “villains I love more than I probably should”. He’s amazing in a really psychotic, sleazy, borderline sociopathic sort of way.

Also, Brides of Dracula is absolutely one of my most favouritest films ever!

4. I may have come up with A FIC PLOT. Before you faint, I should say it’s not really an involved, complex plot, but there is a story and it’s not just characters snarking talking nonsense to each other or just having sex...although there may be sex and snarking talking nonsense in there as well. I’ve written approximately 3500 words so far. But I’m afraid I’ve fallen into my previous bad habit of writing lots of angst. LOL. Well, I can’t have everything.

5. I have too many WIPs on my computer. I really should try to finish some of them.

6. Do you ever finish a film or book or TV show and get the urge to write fanfic of it, even though there would probably be no interest from anyone other than yourself? I get this all the time. I come up with a great idea for a fic about some obscure film or something, or at least something with no internet fandom, and I think, ‘who the hell would even read that?’ Sometimes I do write it down, just to get it out of my brain, but I think it’s slightly sad that only I would read it...especially since I hate reading my own stuff, so I probably wouldn't read it either.

7. On an unrelated note, all I need to do is buy a bookcase and I have finished decorating my living room. It’s taken me a ridiculously long time but I have my cool 60s theme going on. The only thing holding me back now is lack of funds. Alas.

8. My dentist continues to be handsome. This annoys me.

TL;DR I have too much time on my hands. Way, way too much time. And yet, I do nothing productive with it.

Christmas, or something

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/Please state other preference! I do like to try and be politically correct. XD

Did you all get everything you wanted this year?

Most of my presents are stuck at other people's houses because we've had trouble getting about due to unprecedented amounts of snow and our tragically English inability to deal with such things. On the other hand, I've currently got their presents as well, so we're working on an 'exchange of hostages' type situation.

Other that, great time. Food, booze, TV. Watching Doctor Who. The Christmas specials are always rubbish but fun. Did I mention booze?

Anyway, what did Santa bring you all?

BTW, my favourite thing to watch at Christmas. Terry Pratchett's The Hogfather. Watch at 0.45-1.07. ;)

There are many things I admire about him. There are many things I don't admire about him. Mostly, I love his work. Activism aside, he was a great musician and lyricist and his music has been an important part of my life. I think the world is a sadder place without him.

Well...no one can be interesting all of the time

I’ve meant to do a more meaningful update recently, but things have been getting in the way, the way things generally tend to do. So you’ve got this post instead, which is a half-hearted, wishy-washy mix of complaining and squeezing.

1. I have terrible flu that is currently making me feel like a haggard, ninety-year-old woman. I was given it by a good friend of mine at a party. I would have preferred a nice bottle of whiskey, but what can you do, eh?

2. If anyone ever tries to tell me that the human body is the product of intelligent design, I have two words for them: wisdom teeth. The most pointless body part since the appendix. All they do is take up room in your mouth and give you grief. And my (annoyingly handsome) dentist won’t remove them because they’re not impacted or infected or anything. He’s a handsome, pretty sadist. I resent the fact that he only ever really gets to see my teeth. I have other good qualities.

Anyway, as a sickly, captive audience, I’ve been watching TV and doing little else.

3. I’ve been watching Star Trek: The Next Generation (all the best Frenchmen have British accents). Why did I forget how much I love that show? Why? And what is it about the Star Trek programmes that makes it possible to ship pretty much anyone with anyone? Seriously, why are they all so ridiculously in love with each other?

4. Also, also, they’ve been showing Colditz on Yesterday, which I am totally enamoured of! There’s Doctor Watson, Illya Kuryakin and Raffles all in the same show...and on one occasion the second Doctor comes to visit as well; how could this be anything less than brilliant? It’s more than brilliant. And it’s got Nazis, obviously. People will watch anything if there are Nazi villains in it; this is TRUFAX.

5. On the ‘real world’ front, I’ve been watching the student tuition fees protests with pride. Nice to see our youth (LOL, as if I’m an old lady) standing up for something, rather than being apathetic about it (which is becoming increasingly common, I find). This whole thing has been a rather elegant own goal for the Lib Dems who have pissed off the only group of people that actually vote for them. *slow clap*

6. And in final news, it’s, like, almost Christmas (I know because Coca-Cola tells me so) and I’m just not ready for that yet. It’s so hard, with the buying presents and food and the general having to be merry stuff *whinge*

I do like Christmas, I just don’t like all the rubbish leading up to it. Like all the hype and the horrible adverts and people complaining about Christianity being pushed to the back. Dudes, you’ve been given, like, a WHOLE MONTH to celebrate the birth of the main guy in your religion, with songs and everything. Your religion is totally safe. Chill.

Bah, thinking about this and typing it all out has made my brain hurt. I’m going back to bed. *sniffles*

I hope the rest of you are healthy and virus free. :D

Hello Cats and Kittens!

No, I haven't died/been abducted by aliens/put into witness protection etc.. I apologise for the absence which can only be described as a complete lack of attention. Life is okay (between boredom and worrying about the economy) and I've been meaning to come on here more often, but something petty always gets in the way. Boo, I wish there were more hours in the day.

I have been flirting with other Star Trek series *gasp*. I think one day I shall totally have to do a squee post about it, but for the moment I shall just say "squee" and leave it at that.

I have been writing. Occasionally. Posted below are some snippets of some Sherlock fics that I've been idly toying with over the past few months and a completed little House of Cards ficlet that I wrote on a whim while sitting on the bus. I know only posting snippets makes me an awful tease, but I figured that it's better than nothing. I do occasionally finish stuff XD

I still have to complete my M*A*S*H fic. I'm getting so close with it now, that I'm getting impatient with myself. Anywho, I'll quit jabbering now.

Because it made me laugh this morning

I heard a BBC Radio 7 comedy thing this morning; a spoof of Sherlock Holmes. It wasn't great (in my opinion), but this bit cracked me up, and set me up for a not-so-bad day.

Lestrade: I have a body I'd like to show you.

Holmes: Oh, Lestrade, you're such a flirt.

A quick thought before I go to bed

Re: BBC's Sherlock and my fangirly ways.

This thought had sort of been in my mind since the start but after the last episode I was completely and utterly sold on the whole idea.

Kind of a spoiler, but only if you haven't seen the first episode.

I'm supposed to be cleaning, but oh well...

When fandoms collide in a hilarious manner.

So on last Friday's episode of The IT Crowd, we saw (part of!) Douglas' porn version of Star Trek, where he is Kirk and all the other characters are women.

I laughed till I cried.

I then I stole found some .gifs from it!

Very, very relevant to my interests! )

From the delightful [livejournal.com profile] crazymaryt

Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Name 5 songs you love starting with that letter.

It's a difficult concept, actually, picking songs that aren't necessarily your favourites but are your favourites beginning with a specific letter.

I was given the letter 'A'

I've done a lot of waiting around today, which always drives me crazy.

Sherlock Holmes in the 21st Century

A Study in Pink

This is the BBC, modern day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson.

The plot sort of follows A Study in Scarlet but there are a lot of changes. A lot. So many changes that to say more would spoil it for those who haven’t seen it; but let me just say that if you were in STUD for the Mormon bashing, then you’re going to be very disappointed XD

So for this, I will just talk about the characters and themes and how well they have been adapted for a modern setting.

These are just some quick thoughts that I had jotted down then shaped into a vaguely coherent structure. There aren’t really any spoilers, especially if you're already familiar with the canon.

Apologies for babble.

It’s a three patch problem. )
